Instagram Gamification Filter

Idea and Concept

We’ve created an Instagram Filter chock full of fun and summer vibes, one which provides an immersive, interactive experience for the launch of the Red Bull Summer Edition 2020. Starting back in January, COVID-19 certainly rained a little on our parade and made it more difficult for these gamification filters to reach their target audience at home.

Key features and functions of the gamification filter:

  • User-controlled avatar (made possible by moving head horizontally)
  • Points can be collected by catching cascading watermelons
  • ‘Game Over’ when a watermelon crashes to the ground
  • Red Bull cans spawn periodically, providing additional points
  • Hidden Easter eggs offer bonus points

This was the first draft of the game.

How we did it

Made entirely from scratch, of course!

Everything from artwork and coding to quality assurance such as MVP testing, design-product testing and user-testing was our brainchild and done in-house.

Let’s snag a few insights into how the filter works:

The user’s face is tracked continuously in order to accumulate the data necessary for moving a player in the game. Currently, the game is comprised of four watermelons with each having a number between 1 and 4. A random number is generated once the screen is tapped, and the falling watermelon corresponds with whichever number is generated. Additionally, once the screen is tapped, a timer is activated to calculate the interval between random numbers, so that the interval becomes progressively shorter and the watermelons begin to fall more frequently as the game continues.

Simultaneously, the player’s and watermelon’s positions are tracked and if both are the same, a point is added to the counter. Got it?

What we’ve mentioned here are only some of the fundamental functions of the filter. Don’t even get us started on the “Game Over Solution” or the “Bonus Point Feature”. ;)

To wrap it all up, we’ve also created a so-called “Activation Package” to promote the filter via social media. This was essential, as the market for Instagram Filter Games is a relatively new one. And as such, users had to be made aware of the Instagram Games concept, meaning how they work and how much fun they can be!
